History & Background

Manica Boards & Doors Private Limited is the nation’s sole manufacturer of world class hardboard (fibreboard) under the brand name ‘Zimtex’. The organisation is situated in Mutare, the forestry eastern border town of Zimbabwe.

Established over two decades ago, PG Industries Zimbabwe acquired Zimboard Products, the then sole manufacturer of chipboard in the country in 1986. In 1994, Zimboard commenced the manufacturing of hardboard. After a restructure exercise in 2007, the company name was changed to Manica Boards & Doors with Old Mutual as the main shareholder in partnership with Investors in Africa – Takura Ventures (Pvt) Ltd and PG Industries Zimbabwe.

The fibreboard production line has a rated capacity of producing 136 cubic metres per day. The manufacturing plant produces boards from the renewable resource, eucalyptus timber, which is grown in abundance and nurtured in the region’s forests. The timber is reduced to ligno-cellulose fibres, wet-felted and hot-pressed. The production process utilises latest techniques which capitalise on the natural bonding agents already present in the wood thereby eliminating the need for artificial bonding materials. No chemicals are used in the process, making Zimtex an environmentally safe and nontoxic material.

To guarantee continuity, the entity has embarked on a raw material strategy that emphasizes the securing and renewability of the timber resource by working with out- growers and major timber growers in Manicaland. The out-grower programme commenced in 1996 and to date, 4,752 ha of gum is planted.

The business also integrated forward with a Value Addition line that produces Zimtex Faced Doors, Zimtex Faced Blockboard and Zimtex Faced Chair Seats and Backs. The line has an installed capacity of producing 1000 doors, 300 blockboard and 1000 sets of chair seats and backs per day.

1986

The company was acquired by PG Industries Zimbabwe in 1986. It began its operations in Bulawayo under the name African Lumber producing doors, veneers and particleboard.

1988

In 1988 PG acquired another set of particleboard lines from Board and Timber Products Pvt Ltd in Mutare and a new company Zimboard Products Pvt Ltd was born. This effectively closed the Bulawayo line which was old and geographically very far from the timber supplies.

1994

Zimboard Products supplemented its operations by adding the hardboard line in 1994. African Lumber continued its operations in Bulawayo now receiving Zimtex boards for its operations from Zimboard Products.

1997

In 1997 African Lumber moved all its operations to Mutare. September 1997 – Blockboard and veneering application operations started in Mutare.

1998

It later changed its name to PG Value Added under combined operations with Zimboard Products in 1998. Its processes also included solid timber processing of brandering, cornice, cover strip and other mouldings.

2001

In 2001 the two operations Zimboard Products and PG Value Added changed their name to Zimboard (main plant) and Zimboard Value Added respectively.

2003

2003 – Developed a fire resistant door, the FIREX 60 MINUTE FIRE DOOR, generally referred to as the “one hour fire rated door”. This door meets the technical specifications for public installations. The door is a multilayered calcium silicate - Zimtex composite, which uses fire resistant calcium silicate core bonded to Zimtex harboard under hot press conditions.

2004

A composite board was introduced for use where a flat surface is required, and light weights are carried. The board was made up of particleboard with Zimtex board laminated on either side. It came in two thicknesses of 19 and 15mm and in the panel size of 2 440 x 1 220 (like blockboard).

2005

Select Hollowcore door was introduced to cater for the lower part of the market for doors. It was made up in such a way that it uses less timber than the ordinary standard flush door by having one lock block and one hanger block.

2006

PGIZ acquired 60%, partnered with PG Bison Mauritius (40%) forming Manica Boards & Doors. Three units established:

  • Hardboard
  • Particleboard
  • Value Added

Major Highlights:

Manica Boards & Doors served as PG Industries Zimbabwe's manufacturing hub. Sole producer of high-quality hardboard, particleboard, and flush doors in Zimbabwe. Key supplier to PGIZ SBU’s, essential for the PG Group. Significant contributor to PG Group's foreign currency earnings.
